Geographical Situation

Lying isolated in the EAST PACIFIC, in an extreme windward position,
Rapa Nui is the easternmost Polynesian island.

It is in the SOUTHERN Hemisphere at 27° 9’ S latitude, 109° 26’ W longitude.

Situated on the Nazca Plate at a volcanic and tectonic “hot spot,”
it is 3703 km west of South America and 1819 km east of Pitcairn island.

The total land area is 163.6 sq km or 63.2 sq mi.

Plot Summary

Tenuously based on the legends of Easter Island, Chile,
this story details a civil war between the two tribes
on the island: the Long Ears and the Short Ears.

A warrior from the ruling class falls in love with a girl
from the lower class, and must decide on his position
in a time of great civil unrest.

The ruling class are demanding larger and larger Moai
(stone statues), a task which the lower class
and the island ecology are more and more reluctant to provide.

L'île de Pâques, dix-septième siècle.

Sur cette terre somptueuse et rude
que les indigènes appellent Rapa-Nui
 vit un peuple aux coutumes mystérieuses.

Pour mettre fin à la tyrannie que subit sa caste "les courtes oreilles"
et gagner l'amour de la belle Ramana,
le jeune Make va participer
à la course annuelle de "l'homme oiseau".

Il lui faudra alors braver tous les dangers
et, surtout, se mesurer à Noro, son ami d'enfance,

membre de la caste des "longues oreilles"...

Pour le perdant  … c'est la mort assurée !

English Summary 

Inter-tribal rivalry leads to a competition to erect a Moai
in record time before Noro can take part in the race to retrieve the egg.
The reward for winning this race is to rule the island for one year.

The film can be considered a condensed history
of the collapse of the Easter Island civilisation,

for example the tribe cut down all of the remaining trees
to move the Moai to its site.

In the end Noro and Ramana attempt to flee the island in the last canoe.

The plot mixes elements of two periods - the era of huge statues (Moai)
and the later Birdman Cult.

If the conflict between the Long Ears and the Short Ears was real,
then it was over long before the Birdman Cult began.

The name Rapa Nui, commonly used, may not have been
the original native name; that may have been

Te Pito te Henua, the Navel of the World, though there are alternatives.
