a FOIL =
someone or something
that serves as a contrast to another
Example: MERCUTIO is ROMEO's and BENVOLIO's foil
MERCUTIO
- encourages Romeo to go to the party
- tells the story of "Queen MAB"
- speaks in flamboyant
(sometimes vulgar) language
- argues with Romeo
- escalates tension with the Capulets
and draws first in Act III
