Shakespeare in Love 

is a 1998 British romantic comedy-drama film directed by John Madden, written by Marc Norman and playwright Tom Stoppard.

The film depicts a love affair involving Viola de Lesseps (Gwyneth Paltrow) and playwright William Shakespeare (Joseph Fiennes) while he was writing the play Romeo and Juliet.

The story is fiction, though several of the characters are based on real people. In addition, many of the characters, lines, and plot devices are references toShakespeare's plays.

Shakespeare in Love won seven Oscars, including Best PictureBest Actress (Gwyneth Paltrow), and Best Supporting Actress (Judi Dench).

inspiré de la vie du grand écrivain

et dramaturge anglaisWilliam Shakespeare 

au moment où il écrivait Roméo et Juliette.

L'histoire, bien que présentant de nombreux personnages

ayant réellement existé, est en grande partie fictive.

Résumé

L'histoire se déroule à Londres durant l'été 1593.

Le jeune poète et dramaturge William Shakespeare
croule sous les dettes.

Il a promis à son commanditaire, Mr Henslowe, de lui livrer rapidement une nouvelle pièce, Roméo et Ethel, la fille du pirate.

En réalité, il n'en a encore que le titre.

Il ressent alors le besoin de trouver une muse, capable de lui donner un nouvel élan, tant professionnel que personnel.

Une jeune femme de la noblesse, Lady Viola, qui le vénère pour ses sonnets, rêve de le rencontrer et de devenir actrice, mais le théâtre est à cette époque formellement interdit aux femmes et de toute façon inaccessible pour une personne de son rang.

Elle décide alors de se déguiser en homme
et réussit à obtenir le rôle de Roméo.

Shakespeare découvre rapidement la supercherie
et la véritable identité de son jeune premier :
il en tombe follement amoureux.

Malheureusement la jeune femme

est promise à un autre homme, Lord Wessex.

De cet amour impossible vont naître deux des plus grandes œuvres du jeune dramaturge, Roméo et Juliette d'abord, La Nuit des rois ensuite.
